Frequently Asked Questions

Credit Cards

The majority of bars in the town have card readers, but margins are slim for pubs. Grab some cash locally at Bank of Ireland or AIB in town. Your publican will thank you!

Rory Gallagher Festival

Held in May on the bank holiday weekend, the festival attracts crowds from around the world to pay tribute to Gallagher’s legacy and influence on rock and blues.

It’s a big weekend, with over 20,000 attendees, so plan accordingly. In addition to the ticketed events, you’ll find bands in all the bars.

For tickets and information, check out their site.

Trad Music and Performances

If you’re looking for traditional Irish music, plan ahead. You won’t find impromptu sessions usually. Check the calendar for each pub. If there is a festival, your chances improve greatly.

Hours and Opening Times

Many of the pubs are open on weekends. During the week, you’ll typically find Sean Og, Max Bar, O’Donnell’s, Finn Finn McCool’s, and Owen Roe’s open.

If there is a Donegal match on (or another big game), you might find some spots open earlier.

The Vibe

Every pub has its personality. You’ll find a mix of different styles of pubs: country, historic, music, and even shop. There isn’t a fake one in the lot, and all are family owned. Walk around and see what suits you.

What about The Thatch?

Dorrian’s Hotel owns the Thatch Pub, and it’s mostly open when the hotel has a tour bus in. You can inquire at the hotel.

Food in the Pubs?

None of the pubs offer daily meals (you can always get crisps). On the weekends, Dicey’s has pizza. The Golden Dragon Restaurant is inside of O’Donnell’s, up the stairs.

Many of the pubs will let you bring in takeaway. Here are the restaurants in town:

Dogs in the Pubs?

Many of the pubs in Ballyshannon are dog-friendly and well-behaved dogs are usually welcome. It’s best to ask upon on entering.
